Update

We have been quite exhaused with all the travelling (3 hours a day) and our extreme home make-over project so I havent posted much these last 2 weeks. As of last night we have completed what we set out to do and more so we are VERY happy about that. Jamie is compiling a posting about our experiences and we might put up some photos when we return from Mississippi (I am supposed to be packing right now as we leave this afternoon). We are taking all our before and after photos and hope the Jamie's mom likes our transformations to her houses! VF

Another discovery!

Yesterday we had another amazing discovery in Jamie's parents' basement.... I was admiring some of Grandma's gloves (pink, handmade) and at the bottom of the old plastic bag they were in was a small greenish book with appliqued pink fabric flowers on the front. I looked inside and there was her mothers autograph book with autographs dating from 1881!!! It was (like many other things that we are discovering) in mint condition - appearing as though we were the first to open it for decades.

Holiday (vacation) week 2

This week has not been as social as last week, but we have certainly been busy little beavers. We have been doing some work for Jamie's Mom to sort out her basement because during the winter when there was a big snow, it melted quickly and flooded into the basement. For those non-Michigan readers, almost all houses here have basements. I assume it was originally to prevent houses from getting flooded, but these days, with better design than years ago, most people have them 'fixed up' and they are kind of like extensions to most houses but from time to time, floods seem to happen. The situation here was complicated by the fact that not only was there shagpile carpet on the floor, there was a lot of furniture and other things stored there. So we have been getting up early each morning and making the 1hr 20 min drive to Lansing, getting into it all and then driving back late at night. We have been completely exhausted by the process, falling into bed when we get home and not awakening until the alarm goes off the next day (which all seems far too early when the noise sounds!). In the basement the fascinating contents of three houses ave been stored.... items from Jamie and his brothers' childhood, the contents of his grandparents' house (untouched since the mid1970's) and the contents of his great-grandparents farmhouse. We have been carefully sorting everything item, by item and categorising them into large plastic bins:- Grandma's Lace, Poppy's notes and papers, Items for Craftwork, Needlework, Important Family Documents and Historical Photos etc. The last bin is the most amazing of all. There are so many photos from around 1920, that it is quite incredible. I think Jamie's grandma was the first 'Scrapbooker' as some of her photo albums are immaculately laid out just like people who are into scrapbooking do today. Her entire nursing training from 1918-1922 is outlined and we also found, in absolute mint condition, her nursing diploma and other documents. Her trunk was there (although unfortunately none of her clothing) and the newspaper she used to line it with was dated September 1923!

Along with the basement project, we are pretending we are running a local edition of 'Extreme Home Makeover' as Jamie's mom is thinking that she wants to move into a smaller house when they return to Michigan from Mississippi so we are getting the house that used to belong to Jamie's grandparents ready. So during the drive from Detroit to Lansing, we phone up all the different people we need to help us and on Monday, it will all be starting.... builders are coming to make an access ramp and do other assorted chores, the kitchen floor is being re-laid, carpet is going down in the main area, old fridges etc are being taken away, new ones are being delivered and wallpaper is being put up etc. We are hoping that we might even get to hang new curtains that she had previously chosen that I found in a bag and move furniture from the other house over. Shhhhhhhhhhh if you are reading this as she does not know quite the extent of what is going to occur!!!! We hope to have it done this week and take photos to her in Mississippi next week!

Social events of the week

With Jamie being off work this week, we have been rather social. Every Tuesday night 'the group' (as previously described - friends from church and other associates, several of whom came to our wedding) get together for sushi. It's called '$1 sushi night' as each plate of 6 small pieces is $1!!! So for the second week in a row we made it to Sushi Night on Tuesday. Various individuals from the same crowd attend a Bible study on Wednesday nights which is held at a Starbucks not far from us. Quite fascinating really as although it is run by Derek from 'the group' some of the regular attendees are from various other denominations (not to mention random people who happen to be sitting in Starbucks and join in). So we managed to attend that as well this week. As well as cleaning out the garage on Monday and part of Jamie's Mom's basement on Thursday, we made it to the gym and various other places around town as well as lots of leisurely times at home. On Saturday instead of going to our usual church which is about 35 min drive away, we went to one that is nearer (their web link didnt work when I looked at it this evening). Then we went home for lunch - the first time we have had lunch together after church since we got married as we usually go to lunch with 'the group' at someone's house, are travelling or else Jamie is at the hospital. So that was nice to have time together. We had Broccoli and corn soup (Chere Jacksons recipe) and a Michigan salad. For those intrigued by this Michigan food idea - the salad is comprised of lettuce, crumbled blue cheese, dried cherries, sliced pear, caramalised walnuts and a vinagrette dressing. I caramalised the walnuts last week by baking them in the oven for 6 min and then adding water, brown sugar and salt and re-baking them. Quite nice and I am even getting used to the blue cheese in small doses! We had a light lunch as Val and Liz were putting on a fondue party at their apartment in the evening. I was quite excited because I had never been to a fondue party before and had always wanted to go to one! It was fairly eventful with someone spilling the boiling chocolate fondue all over themselves and the white carpet, the cheese fondue almost boiling over and the oil fondue getting smoking hot! I was rather amused by the husband's shout at the time of the chocolate incident of "quick, he is burned, we need a nurse" (and even more amazed by my quick first-aid response)! Today we met a friend of Jamie's from his residency and his wife and 2 yr old at a coffee shop for a couple of hours so that I could meet them we all could have a catch-up. He is a general surgeon and they live 45 min from where Jamie's new job will be. And that's about it for the first week of holidays! We are currently trying to assess what we will do and where we will go for the next four....

At another coffee shop today (Sunday), Jamie decided to surprise me today by appearing out of the bathroom clean-shaven this morning!!! Posted by Hello

House rennovation photos

Here are some photos of some of the work we have had done over the past six months.... Click on the link here

Here is a before and after shot of the stairs from the back door. After the builders discovered the oak floor underneat, we then had the walls painted etc. More photos on kodakgallery.com - will post the link above. Posted by Hello

We had Rick & Camille over for breakfast on Sunday. Jamie thought the table looked so nice with all his grandmothers 'Tickled Pink' china on it and the fruit salad in our Tiffanys bowl wedding present from Darryl, he thought he would take a photo! As of last night however, we have a new wooden table (also from grandma) but we are yet to collect the matching chairs. Breakfast also included waffles with maple syrup (by chef James) and feta/asparagus omelette (by chef Victoria). Posted by Hello

....and the final phase of transformation of our front door! Not too bad for a 60 year old! The brass kickplate in the 4th picture is new and the new screendoor from the 3rd photo is still in place but opened for this picture so you can see the door.  Posted by Hello

As per our post from Jan 28th, the front door has been undergoing some major transformations over the pat few months. This week our friendly builders were back and one of their tasks was to strip back the front door to it's original wood and then varnish it. Yesterday, after about 8 coats of paint stripper and going through two different greens, a brownish colour and a red, they got down to the original white. As of just now (10am) Brent has given up on the stripper (we were almost getting concerned about his health with inhaling so many solvents) and is attacking it with a sanding machine. It seems that is the original door and is made of about 5 different layers of different types of wood. We will post a picture of the finished version once it finally appears!  Posted by Hello

And the time is....

We just changed to daylight saving time last night. Thankfully we remembered on Friday so we could tell our Sunday brunch guests to come at 11am new time, 10am old time. So our evenings will now be longer - great timing for Jamie's 5 weeks off between jobs that starts now! Our time is on this site
